| Shaun Vacher | January 2008-- Hey Coach, Hopefully you can post this somewhere so everyone knows how much we appreciate their support. There will be pictures of us passing out the school supplies shortly. The team looks solid, keep it up! Congrats on another tournament title. I have received (4) packages full of school supplies. Thank you for your support. I keep the packages in my vehicles; we stop by different schools every few days and drop off the supplies with the teachers and students. The city here has the most schools per population out of any other city in Iraq. The local nationals here truly value education, just as we do, they send their kids to the universities in Baghdad and abroad, however the resources available do not always allow this. Every time I am on patrol a child runs up to me asking for a pencil or a pen. Your generosity and selflessness has allowed me to put a smile on their faces and hope in their hearts and minds for a better future. Recently we have built a new school that will allow for approximately 200 students. Although we have a brand new school, supplies and materials to educate them are lacking. Now we have something to offer them. We are at the point in the war where we can gain more by giving a child a pencil or a school a few notebooks than capturing an insurgent. In an insurgency, every time one person is killed or captured there is another local national just trying to survive, desperate to make some money he inevitably becomes our new threat. If we show them something better to turn to, and provide them the resources for a future with promise and stability, then we have gained support for our cause and taken away some from the insurgency. The children here are the future or Iraq, just as in any society. Your efforts are winning the war for us. On behalf of the Marines of Mobile Assault Platoon, Kilo Company we thank you. Gratefully, Shaun T. Vacher, Second Lieutenant, USMC Mobile Assault Platoon, Company K 3D Battalion, 2D Marines |
